A Set of Ten Classical Side Chairs

New York City, New York
Circa 1820

The crest rails on this beautiful set of Classical chairs comprise mahogany moldings framing veneers of crotch mahogany. The back splats are composed of pairs of stylized carved cornucopias. The way the front saber-shaped legs are set back slightly from the seat rail is a nice touch. In the November 1991 issue of The Magazine Antiques, the dealer David Stockwell advertised a set of klismos side chairs by the same maker. The ad states that those chairs are also illustrated in Sack brochure #16, December 1968, page 44, plate 1108
