A Classical Pier Table

Boston, Massachusetts
Circa 1825

This beautiful Classical pier table exemplifies a certain predilection among some wealthy Bostonians for furniture of the highest quality in construction with a conservative leaning toward a lack of ornamentation. This table is topped with a fine slab of nero portoro marble. The conforming apron is veneered with crotch mahogany. Elegant tapering columns have turned capitals and bases. The original mirror plate is framed by bold pilasters with delicate filet moldings. The graceful plinth has book-matched crotch mahogany veneers. A collar of acanthus leaves are carved above the bold animal paw feet. The uniquely turned back feet are similar to others used on the finest Boston furniture.
