A Classical Pier Table

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1825
In the manner of Anthony G. Quervelle

Made stylistically in the manner of Anthony G. Quervelle, this handsome pier table exemplifies the Classical taste in Philadelphia. The original Carrara marble top rests above an apron veneered in crotch mahogany. The front of the apron bows slightly and is adorned by a delicately carved border of gadrooning. The panels above the columns have gilt line decoration. The columns are wrapped in crotch mahogany veneers and have ormolu bronze capitals and bases. A freehand painted gilt border surrounds the original mirror plate. The mirror is framed between two beautiful turned and reeded half columns. The plinth has book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and is accented by another gadrooned border. The table is raised on carved animal paw feet with acanthus leaves and gadrooning while the back feet are elegantly turned. Both the front and back feet retain most of their original verde and gilt finishes.
