Regency 2-Lt Argand

London, England
Circa 1825
Smethurst

This beautiful lamp is one of the most exquisitely ornamented examples of lighting manufactured in the Regency period. A brass tag on the back of the lamp reads: SMETHURST/MANUFACTURER/138 NEW BOND St. The tank is decorated with gadrooning and cast floral mounts while the feeder tubes are reeded and have lion’s heads holding the burners. Garlands of fruit are draped between eagles with outstretched wings on the standard. Ram’s heads and classical masks are positioned at the corners of the base. Pairs of dolphins appoint all four sides of the plinth while four winged animal paws support the lamp on a bronze plinth.
