Parian Bust ~ Clytie
England
Mid-19th century
Attributed to Copeland after the Antique
This extraordinary parian example depicts Clytie rising out of a sunflower. Of note is the rare almost life size dimension. Clytie is the epitome of Classical subjects. Highly desired for fine 19th century collections, the ancient Greco-Roman marble was collected by Charles Townley whose collection is now in The British Museum.
