A Figure of the Apostle John
Copenhagen, Denmark
Circa 1870
Royal Copenhagen
This biscuit figure is after a sculpture by Bertel Thorvaldsen. While he was born in Denmark, he was an internationally renowned Neoclassical sculptor who worked in Italy most of his career. He had a great influence on many emerging artists from Europe and the United States. This piece depicts the apostle John. A beautifully rendered eagle stands at his feet while the apostle holds the Book of Revelations in his hands. At the back of the base, one sees the three blue waves mark of Royal Copenhagen and the impressed inscription Eneret.
