A Pair of Classical Chairs

Boston, Massachusetts
Circa 1825

This pair of side chairs is unique because of the wealth of exuberant carving rarely displayed on Boston Classical chairs. The large crest rail is adorned with paired scrolled moldings and an anthemion-like carving. The same anthemion carving on the splat is combined with large acanthus leaves. Scrolls at the bottom of the stiles complete the transition from the back to the seat. The front legs are turned with acanthus and lotus carvings while the front seat rail is decorated with bold egg and dart carving.
