George Washington

Continental
Mid 19th Century

George Washington was quite the popular subject for the arts throughout the 19th century. This standing figure of patinated zinc depicts Washington accurately attired in full military dress. The pose relates closely to that seen on French clocks of the early 19th century and is perhaps based on John Trumbull’s 1780 portrait of Washington popularized through engravings. In this example, Washington holds a document in his right hand, which likely represents the Declaration of Independence. The circular base is inscribed WASINGTHON [sic].
