George Washington was quite the popular subject for the arts throughout the 19^th century. This standing figure of patinated zinc depicts Washington accurately attired in full military dress. The pose relates closely to that seen on French clocks of the early 19^th century and is perhaps based on John Trumbull’s 1780 portrait of Washington popularized through engravings. In this example, Washington holds a document in his right hand, which likely represents the Declaration of Independence. The circular base is inscribed WASINGTHON [sic].
