Diminutive Sinumbras

Boston, Massachusetts
Circa 1830
William Carleton

These fine and rare examples of sinumbra lighting were manufactured by the Boston firm of William Carleton. The handsome patinated and gilt-lacquered finishes serve to highlight their delicate scale. Brass tags on the burner tubes read: MANUFACTURED BY/W. CARLETON/BOSTON. His company grew to become one of the nation’s larger manufacturers of lamps and gaslighting devices.
