A Set of Four 5-Light Sconces

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1840
Attributed to Cornelius and Company

This set of four 5-light sconces is attributed to Cornelius and Company who was the premier lighting  manufacturer in Philadelphia in the 19th century. The original two-tone gilt finish is preserved under restored tinted lacquers. A beautiful scrolling bracket supports the five arms and is secured to the wall by a large foliate backplate. Matching candle cups and drip plates can be seen on another pair of five-light sconces in the archive of this website. The arms and upright match those on another Cornelius and Company attributed pair of sconces in the same archive. This is the only set of four American Classical  sconces I have ever seen.
