A Regency Sinumbra

England
Circa 1825
Attributed to Messenger & Son

This elegant lamp was likely manufactured by one of the premier English lighting companies such as Messenger & Son and then imported to Boston to be offered in a shop selling fashionable and fancy goods. The burner tube bears a brass tag stamped JOHN B JONES/BOSTON. The Jones establishment continued a chain of business partnerships that became Shreve, Crump & Low in 1869.  The nice heavy castings and the  patinated finish would have appealed to the local clientele. Applied rosettes adorn the cylinder shaped standard while a beautiful frosted and cut glass shade tops the lamp.

One may refer to this website’s collection archive D220 to see a similarly shaped lamp.
