A Regency Sinumbra

England
Circa 1835
Messenger & Sons

This impressive Regency sinumbra lamp was made by one of the premier lamp manufacturers of the early nineteenth century. The inside of the lamp is stamped: Published As The Act Directs Messenger & Sons Birmingham. In addition, the burner tube indicates that this lamp was imported to America to be offered for sale in one of New York City’s premier shops selling fancy goods. The retailer’s tag on the burner tube reads: B GARDINER / N. YORK. This lamp is ingeniously designed by attaching patinated panels to a standard in a gilt-lacquered finish. A very fine frosted and cut glass shade tops the lamp.
