A Regency Argand

England
Circa 1820
J. Smethurst & Company

This lamp is unique in that it is rare to find an argand so completely gothic in decoration. The pierced base and the cluster column are features borrowed from gothic architecture. The tag on the burner tube reads: J SMETHURST & Co/PATENT/158 NEW BOND ST. In the Blue Drawing Room at Chatsworth, there are a pair of two-light argands that match this lamp in form.
