Parian ~ Wood Nymph

England
Circa 1864
After C.B. Birch

This terrific parian example illustrates C.B. Birch’s Wood Nymph. The detail is incredible depicting the nymph adoringly tending a doe and fawn. The full size version was exhibited at the RA in 1867 and was illustrated in the Art Journal in 1869. Charles Bell Birch (1832-1893) was born in London, trained at the RA schools, and studied under Christian Daniel Rauch and John Henry Foley.
