A Pair of Regency Argands

England
Circa 1830
Attributed to Johnston Brookes & Company

In a wonderful original patinated finish, the bodies of these lamps are designed in the shape of nautilus shells surmounted by large dolphin finials. The shade holders are decorated with pierced collars. The lamps rest on rectangular plinths with hippocampi on the sides and Classical masks on the fronts. All this is raised on compressed disk-shaped feet. The attribution is based on an exact lamp with a maker’s brass tag affixed to the burner tube.
