A Pair of Plaster Sphinxes
London, England
Circa 1805
Benjamin and Robert Shout
Benjamin Shout and his son Robert were one of the most successful plaster figure makers of the Regency period. At Brighton Pavilion, a pair of gilded plaster torcheres supported by Three Graces is signed ‘Published March 1803 by Robt. Shout, High Holborn, London’. These smaller ornaments depict a pair of facing sphinxes on marble bases. One of the figures is inscribed ‘R. Shout Holborn’ on the side of its plinth.
