A Pair of Papier-Mache Tables

England
Circa 1850

A delightful pair of occasional tables have beautifully rendered pastoral scenes within a scalloped edge top with freehand gilt decoration. One top depicts a lady riding sidesaddle on a donkey watching over a flock of sheep while the other shows a man and a dog tending cattle and a goat. The hexagonal sided standard is attached to a three sided shaped base with applied abalone on a black lacquered field and simple scrolled feet.
