A Pair of Hanging Sconces

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1845
Attributed to Cornelius and Company

This rare pair of Classical hanging sconces survives with their original two-tone gilt-lacquered finish intact. The wall plates of the brackets are composed of masks of a bearded Bacchus with clusters of grapes on either side. The cast foliate and scrolled arm supports are topped with doves about to take flight from the canopies. Elegant five-light candle sconces are suspended from the canopies of the brackets. Beautiful scalloped bobeches are formed of cast leaves with matte finishes highlighted by burnished edges.
