A Pair of Classical Recamiers

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1840

This pair of recamiers are beautifully preserved. They retain a rich old color and the cabinetwork is very precise. Fine mahogany veneers cover all the surfaces. The fronts of the arms are bracketed by large flat scrolls while the shaped crests on the backs terminate in beautiful scrolls. The feet are designed with classical antecedents suggesting lyres. The seat, back, and arms are upholstered on separate frames that are then affixed to the recamiers.
