A Monumental Overlay Glass Lamp
Sandwich, Massachusetts
Circa 1860
Boston and Sandwich Glass Company
This magnificent cobalt blue cut to opaque white cut to clear lamp is one of the largest and most elaborate glass lamps produced at the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company. It is one of perhaps fewer than a dozen examples that survived in this monumental size. Concerning monumental overlay glass lamps, Sandwich Glass expert Ruth Webb Lee wrote: “One cannot appreciate how enormous they really are from the photograph. So far as I know, they are the largest size in this style. It is to be doubted whether the commercial output of these largest-sized lamps was ever very considerable because they were quite expensive for the times”. Museums with examples include Philadelphia Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, Sandwich Glass Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, Detroit Institute of Arts, Currier Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
