A Classical Sofa Table

Boston, Massachusetts
Circa 1845

This very handsome late Classical sofa table is topped with a rectangular shaped Carrara marble with canted corners. The conforming apron conceals a drawer and is ornamented with  applied small half-round moldings. The marble and apron are supported by a pair of large lyre-shaped uprights and they are joined by a boldly turned and carved stretcher. The lyres are adorned with carved leaves and rosettes. The scrolled feet which are raised on brass casters are also carved with handsome leaves and rosettes on their sides. While the maker of this fine table is unknown, the inside of the drawer is stenciled with the logo of the Boston retailer. The stencil reads: Buckley, Bancroft/& Boyden’s/EXTENSIVE ~ FURNITURE/WAREROOMS./ BOSTON.
