A Classical Sofa

Baltimore, Maryland
Circa 1820

The large deeply reeded crest rail, arm supports, and front legs distinguish this sofa as being made in Baltimore. The ends of the crest rail are indented. The octagonal stiles have recessed Gothic arched panels. The design of the sofa can be seen in Thomas Sheraton’s Drawing Book, dated 1793. Raised on large brass casters, this sofa is identical to one in the Maryland Historical Society collection with a long Baltimore history.
