A Classical Sofa

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1825

This sofa is one of the most successful Philadelphia examples in terms of the execution of the carving. The large mahogany veneered crest panel is topped with foliate carving and flanked by cornucopia. The entire surface of the arms is carved with leaves. Four large reeds adorn the seat rail. The sofa is supported by large animal paw feet decorated with carved leaves and scrolls resting on patinated and gilt-lacquered casters.
