A Classical Sofa

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1825
Attributed to Cook and Parkin

This Philadelphia sofa of very fine quality is especially nice with its visual appeal, fine condition, form, and construction. The shells on the arms and foliate designs on the feet are deftly carved. The tapering cones on the front of the arms create a great transition between the shells and the feet. The ebony inlay in the crest, gadrooning on the seat rail, and use of richly figured crotch mahogany veneers are typical of the best designs from this region.
