A Classical Pier Table

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1825
In the manner of Anthony Quervelle

This beautiful pier table exhibits features associated with the finest cabinetmakers of the Classical period in Philadelphia. The Carrara marble top rests on a conforming apron veneered in crotch mahogany. The apron is ornamented with gilt decoration below a molding painted to appear as ebony. The gilt decoration on a secretary bookcase by Isaac Jones at the Philadelphia Museum appears to be by the same hand. That secretary bookcase is pictured in Boor’s Philadelphia Empire Furniture, Figure 284, page 441. The columns are wrapped in mahogany with fine gilt bronze capitals and bases. The original mirror plate is framed by a gilded molding and centered between handsome engaged half columns Reflected in the mirror, the shaped plinth displays fine gilt line decoration. The feet are painted and gilded to appear as old slightly burnished bronze. The table is illustrated in Boor’s Philadelphia Empire Furniture, Figure 103, page 233.
