A Classical Pier Table

Boston, Massachusetts
Circa 1825

This beautiful Classical pier table epitomizes the aesthetics of wealthy Bostonians. While other furniture centers might adorn furniture with gilt ornaments and free-hand gilt decoration, the emphasis in Boston was on quality of construction and elegant tasteful design. A thick slab of Carrara marble tops a conforming apron veneered in crotch mahogany with flat moldings. The beautifully shaped scrolls are ornamented with long carved acanthus leaves. The concave-shaped plinth is also veneered in crotch mahogany and rests flush on the floor and the original mirror plate is centered between elegant mahogany pilasters.
