A Classical Fire Screen

This classical fire screen in the restrained Grecian style is often associated with the later work of Duncan Phyfe. The identical leg pattern, cylindrical feet, and flattened disk ornamentation are found on known Phyfe pieces. The adjustable screen, which is upholstered on both sides, slides within two columns mounted on a cheval base. The original use of the piece was to deflect intense fireplace heat.
