A Classical Fire Screen

Boston, Massachusetts
Circa 1835

The screen on this handsome Classical fire screen incorporates a needlework behind glass inside a square mahogany frame. It depicts a gentleman returning to town carrying large feathered game on his back followed by his faithful dog. A wide border of flowers surround the scene. This is secured to a tall standard topped with an acorn finial. The base is three-sided and raised on simply shaped feet ending in ebonized moldings. The double collar of foliate decoration is skillfully carved.
