A Classical Document Box

New York, New York
Circa 1820

This pleasing box is of mahogany banded with mahogany and rosewood veneers. Inside the lid of the box, a label is pasted indicating the owner: DAVID WALKER, GOLD & SILVER LEAF MANUFACTURER/FULTON (172) STREET,/NEW-YORK. Duncan Phyfe owned this building, leaving one to speculate that he may have secured his gold leaf and bronzing powders from Walker.
