A Classical Bergere

Boston, Massachusetts
Circa 1825

The bergere is a rare form not often encountered in American Classical furniture. On this beautiful chair, the tall shaped back is finished with a pedimented crest rail veneered in crotch mahogany. The front legs are ornamented with large reeds and raised on brass casters with gilt lacquered finishes. The arms terminate in scrolls and are topped with upholstered arm pads. The frame is covered in a Scalamandre harateen following a period upholstery model.
