A Classical Armchair

New York
Circa 1830

This chair is one of the most desired models for collectors of American Classical furniture. In addition to the French Restauration influence on this chair, the carved lotus motifs on the arm supports were indicative of the Egyptian Revival influence that integrated into French furniture designs following Napoleon’s 1798 campaign into Egypt. This armchair is likely based upon plate 667 Pierre de la Mesangere’s 1829 installment of Collections des Meubles et Objets de Gout and is identified as a “Fauteuil de Salon”.
