A Classical Armchair

Boston, Massachusetts
Circa 1835

This beautiful armchair exemplifies the Boston preference for English precedents. The maker of this chair was no doubt familiar with the English pattern book, Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, published in London by Thomas King in 1829. The easy chair pictured in plate 24 served as the pattern for this chair. In keeping with this precedent, it has been upholstered replicating the pattern exactly as represented in the same plate. The red wool and linen harateen complements the rich mahogany wood of the frame.
