A Carved Bench
Possibly Irish
Circa 1820
This is one of the most unique benches I have encountered. It reminds me of the carving of Philadelphia cabinetmaker Joseph Barry who emigrated from Ireland but I am not convinced it is American. The carving is of the highest quality. The uprights terminate in carved bird heads. A large carved shell is centered below the curved slip seat. The legs end in carved animal paw feet.
