This Berlin iron statue depicts a standing Thomas Jefferson holding an unfurled scroll stating: Declaration / of / Independence. Jefferson is modeled in a similar pose as the bronze statue in the Capitol Rotunda sculpted in France by Pierre-Jean David d’Angers. Devaranne was a goldsmith and jeweler in Berlin where he sold ornamental cast iron objects. As an independent designer who created new and highly decorative art objects, his products were praised for the extraordinary technique and delicacy of his designs. An inscription under the base reads: Devaranne / Ac. Kunstl. Berlin / Deponirt.
