A marble version of Penelophon, The Beggar Maid was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1867. The piece is impressed on the rear of the tree stump: W Brodie RSA / Sc Eding / 1867 and is also impressed in the rear of the base: COPELAND. King Cophetua, legendary King of Africa, did not care for women until he saw this beggar maid with whom he fell in love.
