A Regency Sinumbra

Circa 1830

This handsome Regency sinumbra is presented in a patinated and gilt-lacquered finish and topped with a beautiful frosted and cut glass shade. A series of gilt torcheres ornament the base of the standard which is supported by a stepped hexagonal plinth. The cast iron base weight is impressed MESSENGER and the burner tube has a brass tag that is marked: B GARDINER / N YORK. This illustrates the practice of importing fine lamps from England and retailing them through “fancy stores” such as Baldwin Gardiner in New York City. An identical lamp with the retailer tag of Lewis Veron of Philadelphia is featured on pages 68 and 69 of the Hirschl & Adler 2018 exhibition catalog Augmenting The Canon. In addition, an identical sinumbra is exhibited in the Chillman Parlor at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. It was purchased from dealer Peter Hill by Miss Ima Hogg in 1967 and given to the museum the following year. That lamp bears the tag of New York retailer J. & I. Cox on its burner tube.
